The host of services that will operate in this centre recognises that it is a wide range of factors that have the potential for making the biggest difference to people’s lives. From German pariah to British knight, Sir Ludwig Guttmann defied Nazi persecution, revolutionized the treatment of paraplegic patients, and founded the Paralympic Games. The dedication of all the local partners involved shows the commitment we all have in this borough to make improvements for the benefit of local people. Sir Ludwig Guttmann CBE FRS (3 July 1899 18 March 1980) was a German-British neurologist who established the Stoke Mandeville Games, the sporting event for people with disabilities (PWD) that evolved in England into the Paralympic Games. The Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales said: “This first class facility is an example of how our vision to achieve a true legacy from the 2012 Games can become reality. I was brought up in Newham, so I am delighted that this building has been transformed from an Olympic centre into a community health centre for everyone to use.” The National Paralympic Heritage Trust (NPHT) was established in July 2015 to enlighten and inspire future generations by. Before World War II, most paraplegic patients died. More than 100 people attended the event which included a presentation by architect Mark Rowe, guided tours, and information regarding the health and wellbeing services that are available in the local community.Īde Adepitan said: “It was a privilege to be invited to open the Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health & Wellbeing Centre, named in honour of the founding father of the Paralympic games movement. The Paralympic Movement was born out of the vision of Sir Ludwig Guttmann. The Sir Ludwig Guttmann Health & Wellbeing Centre was officially opened last week by British Paralympian and TV presenter Ade Adepitan and Eva Loeffler, daughter of Sir Ludwig Guttmann, who unveiled a commemorative plaque in his honour.
